8000 years ago, the spud was already cultivated in the Peruvian Andes. Over the years 1000 to 1400, the Inca civilisation grew in the Cuzco Valley and their agricultural approaches improved. It boosted potato production further. That vegetable was deeply embedded into their culture. Time was even measured by how long it took to cook a potato.

The Spanish invaded the Incas in 1532. Because of this invasion, spud was introduced in Europe after Spanish explorers returned in their homeland. The potatoes played a role in the 19th century population boom. Potatoes were also introduced in Ireland. During the Great Famine, the potato crop became diseased, leading many people from Ireland to immigrate in North America or Australia.

Today, there are more than a thousand types of spuds. They are an integral ingredient to a lot of cuisines across the world. Nearly a third of the world's potatoes come from India and China.

To conclude, spuds have been important for many nations to different times around the world.
